Profile
SRS-442 was a fully polymer-based prototype spaceship with faster-than-light capabilities designed by the Putorius Shipbuilding Company and briefly used as their flag ship/demonstration model. Its unique materials were used to allow for greater flexibility in the environments in which the ship can explore, both within atmospheres and in hard vacuum. The lack of rigidity required somewhat unusual engineering techniques, which proved to be too costly to use for Putorius' typical customers. Only one of its type was built, and was considered lost after a severe systems malfunction while orbiting a newly discovered planet.
The ship was primarily controlled by a sentient central computer, which took the name Sirius, a name taken from the mascot of the Putorius Shipbuilding Company. To make its interactions friendlier to the crew, it used a small version of that mascot, a shiny white dog with a blue star over one eye, as its digital avatar. Both the avatar and the mascot figured heavily in the company's marketing materials at the time. Sirius was capable of operating all systems on its own, but was heavily restricted by the controls set in place when it was deployed, as was typical of Putorius' ships.
Crash Landing
While the crew of SRS-442 was rescued by a nearby vessel, the ship was too large to tow out of orbit. The orbit was expected to decay within several hundred days, and was expected to be destroyed during an uncontrolled entry. However, Sirius, in its damaged state, was able to reroute enough systems over time to power thrusters and other key systems. It used its thrusters to de-orbit, and survived re-entry into the atmosphere followed by a semi-controlled flight into terrain in a thinly settled area of the planet, where it remained until it was discovered by a local canine.
